Afghans

As a change from the monotomy of completing my remaining market stalls I decided to tackle the newly arrived "Atlantic" plastic  Afghans. After much cursing a little frustration I managed to cut. file  and base up twenty figures, initially for deployment to 'Jimland' for use as Slavers, for whichI will only ever need 10 rifle armed and 10 melee armed figures .
The next five 'rifles'
The centre figure in the photograph above was the first figure to be assembled and took about an hour ! The next nine took another hour and the final ten about the same. Some poses do look a bit awkward, but I'm OK with that.

'Reverse view of all the rifles'
Five of the 'swords' (and yes I know one has a musket)

For some reason I failed to photograph the other five swordsmen, but here's a rear view pf the 'second ten'
The 'swordsmen' from the rear
Overall I was happy enough with the figures, but can't help thinking they'll need an input of metal figures to round the force of (probably from "Artizan", "Old Glory" and "Perry". A mountain gun and some a few obvious leader types are high up on the list should I make an Afghan force. I have half of the first box and another complete box of these figures, so can make up another 60 figures, but will aim at getting these twenty painted up first.

Finally here's a photograph comparing one of the 'tallest',  'Atlantic' Afghans to and one of the tallest 'Old Glory' Brit. (unfinished)
Figure compare to Old Glory Brit.
I'm much happier now to tackle the other plastic box sets I recently purposed, though I did have a couple of broken swords, a lost arm and very sticky fingers after assembling this lot, it was a lot easier than the basing and inevitable painting that will follow!

Thanks for taking the time to visit, I know it's not a lot to see  but it's  all I got this week!

That's it then for another week  and as usual I'll get around to catching up on blogs I normally comment on, and as always your comments are both welcomed and appreciated.

Postscript: Is anyone else NOT looking forward to any changes Blogger may make this month. ?

  1. Great to see these Joe as I have been tempted by them myself. I rather like the look of the detail. As for the Blogger changes, I swapped over to the new format last week and find it a bit frustrating. Just silly things like not having the buttons where I am used to them and something doesn't seem quite right with the photographs, but I am sure I will get the hang of it.

    1. Thanks Michael, with forty figures costing just £25, I don't see how you can go wrong. The detail is better than I expected, though some is a little 'soft' imho. The weapons, especially their wrod are very thin a little flimsy too.
With blogger if it frustrates me too much (and I hope it doesn't) then I may well find an alternative of some type.

  2. Great progress Joe, as assembly can be half the battle with some figures your at least 50% there. The poses all look fine from the photo's. I used to say if you can get in the pose comfortably then it's good, but I imagine much like myself these days it's not possible as the most simple of poses hurt now ! LOL
scale wise it fits in well with the British model, as the Pith helmet adds extra mm's on the British model.

    1. Thanks Dave - but just to say that 20 figures is only a quarter of the fghans I have and a mere twenty out of the 140 new plastics I hve bought!
I'm happy enough with their scale, I have large Redoubt figures mixing in well with the OG too, so I'm not bothered if they're a bit hurly types.

  3. Great figures for Jimland, Joe, or colonial games.

    1. Thanks MJT, yes if/when I finish more of them, they'll add to my colonial forces.

    1. Thanks Michal, other than my assembly, they're decent figures.

  5. I think you do your self a disservice the poses look fine and some look very good. Maybe the 2 chaps who look like they are giving away their rifles are a little awkward but they could just as easily be hitting someone with the butt of it.

I've only assembled plastic figures once, about 60 of them and quite enjoyed getting the poses how I liked them but it was a fiddly process i must admit.

With you painting soeed these should all be complete by next week. 😀

    1. Thanks Vagabond, my rifle units in Sudan (alll metal) all use a similarly posed leader figure with his arms in akimbo iirc, so it was an experiment to duplicate (I don't like my effort tfh).
Suprisingly I didn't mind the assembly process , once I could get into a 'mass production' technique.

  6. Decent looking figures, already primed? Motoring along! I'm interested in what their like as I quite fancy their dark age Irish, although releasing them just as I finish my army isn't great timing!

    1. Thanks Iain, they're proprtionally good and slimmer than a lot of other 28's I have. The plastic swords are very slim, as are the muskets and it was tricky for me with my chipolata fingers cutting them cleanly from the sprues, managing to break a couple, but there's lots of spares !
They took my Wilko spray primer without any preparation and though the detal is a little on the soft side, I reckon they're easy to paint. (I have started painting them!)

    1. Thanks Frank, you're very more optomistic about my about progress than I am! I'm struggling to get five completely painted by Monday !
