First Filthy Five (Afghans)

I did my usual hour or so day's painting n the first twenty "Atlantic" Afghans, but by Saturday (and after three one-hour sessions I came to the realisation that I was never going to get all twenty finished in time for today's post.  determined to finish something, I concentrated on five figures and after another three sessions on Sunday, here's the results.
As an added bonus, there's an unusual amount of slightly blurry photographs and a lot of padding (mostly rear shots, save for the chap on the right!)
The chap on the right was the first that had been glued together and whilst al of these five were all a bit rushed, they're good enough for my purposes.
Even with my new brushes, I have to admit I'm not good at painting figures (or painting most anything else for that matter).
On to the pics ! :

Kneeling figure (obviously)
Kneeling figure rear view (again, a bit obvious)
Slightly blurry man
Rear view

No rear-view man

Last man (standing)

Rear view (still standing)
Comparison - Redoubt (left) and swarthy Afghan (right)

Group Shot (padding)

Rear Group Shot (more padding)
So five figures in a week at this rate I can have a unit in a month !
Whilst I hate painting figures, painting non-uniformed ones is an added pain, give me a couple of hundred regulars every time. I could have gone with a basic white, as per the box illustrations, but I wanted a little more colour though I have tried to use earth, subdued colours.

Current state of one of my paint trays (wish my painting wasn't blurry)
Over the next week I will continue on with the remaining fifteen that will be sufficient for my "Jimland" needs, the rather blurry photograph on the right shows their current state.

That's it then for another week, hopefully there was something of interest and f course, as always, your comments are both welcomed and appreciated.

  1. The first five look great Joe, and the other fifteen look to have had a great start to them. I applaud the fact that you've added irregular random colours instead of going the easy route of just white, this has added a lot of character

    1. Thanks Dave, I have enough "mostly white" with my Mahdists (all four hundred of them)and decided a lot of browns and other dour colours would be more appropiate. The other fogures are about three-quarters of the way there

  2. Look good to my blurry eyes Joe. The Last Man is a very nice figure. I find Redoubt to be on the Heroic (tall) side of 28mm, though they are nice sculpts.

    1. Thanks MJT, they're much better if you squint too!
The Redoubt pieces I have came with the Redoubt steamer, bought some 20 years ago, but there are so few they fit in fine.

  3. Been hard on yourself again Joe, are they the best painted models I've ever seen ? no but their far from the worst & most importantly their painted :)

I'm with Dave's comment above on going outside the box on how you painted them.

    1. Thanks, Frank, I agree and they're probably not the best I ever painted either, but failing eyesight, colour blindness and shaking hands donesn;t help !
I didn't have much info on Afghan dfess, so just made it up as I went along and they;re for "Jimland" anyway !

    1. Thanks Michael, I'm not so sure sure I can finish the remainder as fast as I would have liked, but another five ? Almost certainly (having real-life issues atm)

    1. Thanks Iain, I was trying to get "just the twenty" finiinished but ran out of time and enthusiam, part of the problem being the non-unirom nature of this force.
more to come though next week!

  6. These have turned out very nicely indeed and will probably see more table time that the large force of regulars you painted recently so that's a big bonus surely.

    1. Thanks, Vagabond, you're absolutely correct, this will certainly see service whilst the Brits, well that's an entirely different kettle of fish. (Don't know what I'll be doing with the other 60 though)
