Return of the Five (plus Two)

In a fit of enthusiasm, got from who know where I dug out one of the models from my  54mm western project, based on the 1960s film the Magnificent 7, last seen on this blog a year ago! I thought I'd put some colours on to see if it would keep my enthusiasm going  (but probably more because I had nothing to post about this week!)

For each of the three buildings, I've tried to get as close as possible to their real-life counter parts in the film, which is very tricky ! (Each photograph of the model is followed by a similar view from the film)
Mostly I've done block colours, as either primer (in the case of tiled roofs) or trial colours, still needing shading and highlighting - but it's a start !
The 'Shack' on the left of the three
The white smoke on the left is from a gunshot

The 'Jail' in the centre
Is that a copper hood over the jail window ?
The rightmost building, the 'Blue' house
Yes,  I do have a pot ready to go into that peculiar alcove!
The alcove and the side wall.
How it looked in the film.
So, that's what I've been up to last week and hopefully this week I'llget a little more done on the model, after yet another hospital visit ( a follow-up to my operation0 and the collection of my spectacles  - yay! The latter will enable me to more successfully paint the window frames !

That's it then for another week, hopefully there was something of interest here - at least it's current and hobby-related !

Thanks for taking the time to visit, as alaways your comments are both welcomed and appreciated.

  1. They are some remarkably good source pictures you are using and the models reflect them, it's good to see you still working away on various projects even if no gaming.
I actually had a game of Palaeo Diet the other day, a bit of a strange experience as it's been so long I couldn't remember any of the rules and kept having to look things up. Age and infirmity can't be ruled out.

I see Roy is reading your blog, Roy if you read this, hope you are well and all the best.
    Cheers

    1. Thanks John, the sourcrs came a lot from clips on Youtube and a lot of screen capture. I also had the film recorded on my TV which wasn't as successful !
I'll point Roy in this direction too !

  2. Wonderful to see you painting again, Joe, and let's hope the new glasses really help! You've matched the buildings to their movie counterparts really well, and you're right, that hood over the jail window does look coppery to me too.

    1. Thanks Matt, spotting the hood was a real pain; it's postly because I 'tidied' the photos on photoshop when I spotted it.

  3. Excellent progress Joe, so nice to see you painting again, and carrying on with this project. I think the colours you've chosen work perfectly as the basis to work from, and can see a lot of washes in your future ! LOL
Hope the spectacles help, and the hospital visit goes well.

    1. Thanks Dave, the base colours seem to work well enough for me, save the terra cotta pantiles - that need a big repaint imho.
The new spectacles can only be a good thing nd shoul dhelp somewhat with the window frames !

  5. To be honest, Joe, this is one of those times when I haven't got a clue how to say what it is that I want to say but, have to admit that I really think these building models (based off a movie set / reality?) are really cool. [No idea when I last said 'I thought something was cool', but that's the word that comes to mind.]

Have to, also, admit that 54mm games, particularly skirmish -types, are quite appealing to me. I've seen a few photo's of games put on, at southern shows, by the Skirmish Wargames Group iirc, that use 54mm and have always been impressed by what I saw.

    1. Thanks Roy, I've seen at least three attempts by other gamers making this village, but all had missed things that I've spotted or they have the proprtiones completely askew.
54mm westerners were built for skirmish games and the Timpo figures with removable weapons left no doubt as to whther their wepons were i their hands or not.

    1. Thanks Iain, I'm a little unhappy with how light the red is on the pantiles, but the other colours look good starters.

  9. Great work Joe! I didn't know you were a gladiator AND a Wild West aficionado too! A man after my own heart. If you ever get to play a game with these may I suggest Ruthless by Fireball Forward. They are simple, excellent fun and free.

    1. Thanks Frank, I've been playing western games since the early 1970's and dug out all my old western toys purely for blog posts!
I've looked at the "rules with no name" and a couple of others too, but nothing has really got my juices flowing. I will take a look at "Ruthless" though.
I've had numerous posts about my western collection starting about August 2020 - during one of our many lockdowns !
