Sudan Odds and Sods

Over the last week I've been painting away furiously (from my pov) averaging two, one and a half hour sessions a day, on my 65 British Infantry for the Sudan. By Friday evening I realised that I would never get them done in time for this post, having discovered they still needed a multitude of minor details to paint (such as the discovery that some, but not all, had bayonet sheaths).
Rear view (obviously) for those who like this sort of thing (all Redoubt)
To enable me to show some progress I dug out some odds and sods that I 'd started and never finished, all in various stages of completion and here they are.
What they are is fairly obvious, save possibly for the chap on the right imho - Infantryman or Sailor - who knows ?

Obligatory blurry pic
Ivor Biggun
Omar and his beautiful girlfriend (or so he's been told)
I've also re-visited other 'nearly finished' models, destined for Jimland thinking I could finish these off too (I couldn't), so heres some more wips:
Pack animals (needed for my imminent Jimland expedition)
Some lovely asses (from Warlord maybe ?)
Finally a shot of my "Oh so close to being finished Brits":
Still no faces, straps on their mess tins, bayonet sheaths...
I'm a bit disappointed that despite my best efforts (and a worrying slight cold) I still pleased with my efforts and I'm now off to set up my next adventure into the wild of Jimland (where anything can happen - and often does).

That's it then from me for this week thanks for taking the time to vist and of course your comments are welcomed and appreciated.

Please stay safe, keep calm and carry on painting.

(Can you tell I;m still trying to get used to this new camera ?)

(I still miss the spellchecker too)

  1. You might not have got everything finished that you wanted to Joe, but you did create an amusingly captioned blog post!

Our household has had an on-off cold for the last three weeks. I was concerned that if we coughed outside the house people might panic and think we had something a lot worse, but luckily its just a cold with its usual sneezing and runny nose.

Is it a piglet hitching a ride on that ass?

    1. Thanks Roy, I aim to please with my pathetic childish humour and yes that is indeed a piglet on the mule/domkey. I think my wife and I have been exchanging cold germs (as you do) for the last few weeks too.

    2. Joe, I've lost all the emails I used to have for fellow bloggers so can only tell you I've started a new blog via your comments.

I've just posts a 4AD report - though its a bit wordy and features no photos of painted figures yet. Here's a blog address if you're interested.

    3. Thanks Roy, I think it's a good thing to be actively puting thoughts to paper. I find it very theraputic. i's one of the things I've done for years, whether it be ideas for games, maps or most fequently tinkering with rules - writng my own adapting the rules of others or just reading new rules for ideas.
Of course I'll be taking an interest in anything you write and I'll be taking a look soon.

  2. Your WIP shots are well on the way to being finished Joe, and with so many models there that's a huge chunk of painting.
The finished models look great, and must feel good to get them finished as well.
Hope the cold stay's at bay for you, and stay safe my friend

    1. Thanks Dave, I'm cross-fingered that I'll finish the Brits this week and they're the last majpr paintin gjob for the Sudan project. I have proabbly a dozen or so bit and bobs still to go.
You would think with the amount of meds I take I'd be an inpernetrable barrier to colds, but no, it doesn;t seem towant to leave.

    2. Thanks Brummie; Bryan and I haven't been in touch with one another since December 2014 (yep, six years ago), though I still read his blog occassionally.

Vagabond: In the three years prior to Dec 2014 Bryan and I exchanged well over 300 emails and he always replied. I suspect he cant atm or I'm sure he would.

  6. It took me about 30 hours painting to finish 26 pirates last week so in my terms your output us amazing or mine is glacial.

    Keep safe.

    1. Haha, thanks Vagabond, it's taken many weeks to finish these, considering I paint less than 12 hours a week on average.
Thanks goodness my 400+ pirates are finished !

    2. I think I have 10 more Pirates and that's my lot, it just goes to show the scope of our relative ambition, me 36 you 400+, hats off to you Sir.

    3. I think my pirate collection took about two years to get to its curren size, but I believ your own force will be used far mor than my own ever will.

  7. I reckon 73 minis (3 of them four-legged and so should count as 6)is a definite "win", even if there's a bit of finishing off to do. You've definitely beaten my own output, even though I've spent more time painting than usual during this enforced time at home.
I hope the pair of you can shake off that pesky cold, and all the best for your next expedition in Jimland Joe :-)

    1. Thanks TWA, I'll be concentrating on doing five or six minis at a time as all I've got lft are individuals rather than huge uniformed units. I've just about doubled my painting output due to lighter evenings rather than anything else.
Colds are in abeyance atm thank goodness.

    1. Thanks Michale for your optimism, I'll be trying yo finish them this week and get a game in too - I wouldn;t hold your breath.
Oh yes, I claim it's good progress too, even if they're not up to showcase standards, I think they're a fair wargame one.

  9. Great effort Joe & I wish I'd the same discipline as you have, I'm more like a cat on a hot tin roof at the moment.

I hope the cold is clearing up, stay safe mate.

    1. Thanks frank, very little has changed with my situation as we rolled into the current self-isolation state. My habits and daily routines haven't changed that much tbh, though I do miss collecting my grandaughter from school !
Cold is now in hiding, just waiting to attack again !
      Stay safe too mate.
