Sudan - 1st House - Finished !

This week I've been making some more progress towards finishing some buildings for my Sudan project. The large Souk building was gunked up, dried out, and sanded down. Doors were all finished off and mostly painted, but the biggest step forward was finishing off the first (practise) building  made to a level I was happy enough with.
The photograph on the right shows the completed model.
Before doors and pots added !
To get to the final stage I washed the original model in black (though in future I'll be using a very dark brown), then a sandstone wash, followed by a magnolia (ish) colour (I'd ran out of magnolia and used the closest I had); next was the final white dry brush to highlight everything. The white is not a brilliant white but rather a very, very ,very light grey imo. (It's called either chalk white or moonlight white)

Colour before the final two highlight colours were added
Black wash on a second building

Another view of the finished building
Rear view (bit boring)
Another rear view (really boring)
Side view (asleep yet ?)
Slightly more interesting internal view - note the corner roof supports
The internals, haven;t had the same attention as the exterior, but will get a small amount of attention when more buildings are finished.
View showing removed roof  and a gravity defying pot...
The other roof removed - again with the pots (acting as a handle to remove the roof)
That's it then one  adobe build down and lots more to go !

In other News

I ordered some bits from "Frontline Wargames" - superb service and outstanding resin casts, for  a very reasonable price. Their Wild West stuff has everything you could imagine needing for a western town.
Here 's some photos of the things I bought with the Sudan in mind  !
Market stuff (4 counters) and a fountain !

Library shelves, cupboard, open book (on stand), chair and globe
Bedroom stuff, wardrobe, drawers (with lamp and stuff on it) plus bed
Boudoir (fancy bedroom) - great model !
In addition I also bought some civilians figures from "Eureka UK", again, wonderful service and excellent figures:
It's the angle of the camera making them appear smaller going right !
Photo comparison: Redoubt on left, Eureka centre and Foundry on the right.
So I have some salesmen for the Souk and some beautiful women to go shopping.

My adventure in Techy Land during these two purchases would fill a post by themselves. One of the order forms had pale yellow check options which I didn't always notice and my PayPal account wouldn't let me log in (since fixed), but eventually everything was sorted and the Interweb gave a sigh of relief (as did my daughter who had sorted it all out for me) .

I 'll be taking advantage of the added hour of not having to pick up my granddaughter and do some figure painting this week and making up for losing the weekend to a mandatory wedding attendance.

So that's it then for anther week , thanks for taking the time to visit and as always your comments and both welcomed and appreciated.

  1. The finished house looks excellent Joe. Worth all the effort you have clearly put in. I like those civilian figures from Eureka very much.

    1. Thanks MJT, I'm pleasedwith it butnot looking forward to finishing the remaining models. It's the first time I've purchased Eureka minis and they're far better than I anticipated - I do like their almost,'comic' charicature look.

  2. The finished building looks excellent, and great insight into your painting process to achieve it, some interesting purchases that don't all look like there for this project, shall be interesting watching these develop

    1. Thanks Dave, a lot of the things I paint have multiple layers or ewashes, where this is sufficent texture to warrant it, I think it gives a more 'solid' look (and it's easy). The stalls will be used for the Souk and the library items will be for Gordon's study (I did buy t mainly for the globe !). One or a mix oof the two bedroom bitss are also intended for the Palace but I didmb't know which I prefered, so bought both !

  3. The building looks superb especially with the addition of the pots. Not sure I knew about Frontline, but they certainly have some wonderful pieces.

    1. Thanks Michael, Frontline have been around for a time and iirc they did many of their pieces in metal, but nw I beleive they;re almost entirely in resin. Their web-page hardlydoes them justice (the pics are very old). I think that I came across them as they were one of the few outlets that did civilan casualties (6) sutiable for zombie games.

  4. I really like that building Joe, been L shaped & with the little walls they are plenty of places for to get cover from & the pots as handles is just genius :)

I noticed some of the new stuff you acquired is stuff I have also, the food tables & the little fountain & your right to be pleased with them.

    1. Thanks Frank, I have seen small walls being used as handles too, but I do like my pot handles !
Fronline doesn't seem to get the publicity it deserves, even if it is a very small operation - the service was great!.

  5. Thanks for the step by step process, looking at the 3rd and 4th picture the colour looks horrible and I think I would have thrown it in the bin, but your continued washes have turned it into a lovely building, very well painted.
I've not done much with washes, finding they tend to soak in rather than flow on my buildings so I've tended to rely on dry brushing. This is so impressive that I'm going to try and emulate it when I get round to doing mexican adobe style houses for what may end up being called Little Tequila.
I don't agree with Frank that the pot handles are genius but they are a bloody good idea that will be borrowed.
So far excellent, look forward to the rest of them being finished.
    Cheers

    1. Thanks Vagabond, the washes are only initial stages and drybrushing takes over the final steps.
I agree with you, I'm no genius and have probably nicked the idea sometime in the past and stored it in my subconscious !
I'll be pleased too when the remainder are done !

    2. I just came back to have another look at the building and I've changed my mind about the pot handles, they are genius, not because of the handle bit but because the terracotta colour stands out so well, improving the overall aesthetic look of the adobe with these small accents of colour moves it up a couple of notches in my opinion.
      Very well done.

    3. Thanks Vagabond, I'd never thought about the pots adding colour to the model too, but you're right. I've hd a few ideas since adding the pots and now that I've all but finished the other four houses I'll be adding detailing that will add a lot more colour to the otherwise drab, dour buildings.

  6. Great looking buildings Joe! Absolutely love that final color, looks fantastic 🙂 I have those same Eureka miniatures painted up, you're definitely going to like them and they will fit perfectly with your buildings. Can't wait to see you paint up those Frontline pieces, they look the business!

    1. Thanks Ivor, I'm still unsure as to te final colour, but it's close enough for what I had intended.
I rea;; like the Eureka figures and won;t mind paining them up, but the scenic bits from Frontline will take a while longer.

    1. Thanks Iain, too like building not to look pristine and of course 'fast' is always a bonus too.
