Alive and....

Well?
Having taken in the Shildon Show last year, I am intending to once more brave the wilds of the Southern wastelands to visit this great show. I'm also looking forward to meeting  fellow blogger Roy Williamson of the blog Never mind the Jankers.
For once, I have a few things on my list which I'd like to purchase and have some limited funds (advanced Xmas money) with which to do so (unlike the Gateshead show I recently attended on a shoe-string).
In other news:
I have had an enforced absence from all things blogging realted recently due to a resurgence of an illness I've had over the last few years. Whilst this is is bad enough I lost two days to being bed-ridden by flue (though mostly unaware of what was going on around me.
Of course this has left me with the job of trying to clear the back-log of blogs I regularly like to both visit and comment upon, but I've been trying to make the effort. Apologies to daGobbo though, whose blog seemed to have vacated itself from my reading list! (All OK now though.
In addition to the several carrier-bags of meds I have to take over the coming weeks, I also have two imminent hospital visits, having already had two and just for good measure a couple of optical test too -just to discover I now have a least one other problem in its infancy and one pending!
Take it from me people, getting old sucks big time - don't do it!

I'd also like to thanks the two bloggers that showed such consideration after my fortnight's absence from the blogging front - that's two more than when I disappeared from the interweb for two months a year or so ago!

In yet more news, some of you may be aware, I lost someone, about two years ago, whom I thought would be regular gaming opponent but a southern friend has recently moved North and now lives a mere five minute walk from my house. Even though he is  mainly a fantasy player (I know, I know) he has expressed interest in gaming with me in some of the projects, so things could be on the up!

Thanks for visiting and if you've taken the time to read to read through all of the above drivel - you're a braver man than I.

All comments of course are welcomed and appreciated.

  2. Sorry to hear you're having such a rough trot recently mate, it's terrible when these impact your day to day life let alone any hobby time that you have. No worries about dropping off your blog roll but I'm glad you came back for more as I appreciate your frank comments that often give me such food for thought.

I hope you're at least moving on the upward trend now and would continue to do so.
Good to hear you might be getting some gaming in too, that should make you feel a bit better too :-)

    1. Thansk dGG, ithas been a very rough time lately, but I've emerged into the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. I think the next few months may even see me playing some games too - which will give me something to blog about!

  8. I only hope I can live up to your expectations :)

Though if I don't there's Dave Docherty's Sudan, and the Redcar chap's WW2 Desert games to play/view instead.

And anyway, I thought Zombies counted as Modern Fantasy! :D

Take care, and I'll see you on Sunday.

    1. Thanks Roy, I guess, no-one lives up to anyone's expectations, but being the northerners we are, we take people as they are. I'm 99% sure I'll be there along with #1 son and my Southern mate.
I've always thought that if you took away the zed elemnt from a game, you should have a serviceable modern skirmish game (or whatever the setting is for the zed game).

    2. If anything the addition of Zombies to a Moderns game makes gaming the contemporary subject more acceptable to many gamers, I'd say.

Allowing that distancing from today's politics or religion, and giving those that want to play Moderns but are afraid to for those very reasons, the license to do so, and have fun with the idea of a zombie apocalypse at the same time.

I'd be interested in the results of a wargaming poll, if there ever was one, asking the question of people who wouldn't touch Moderns because of the various reasons they don't, 'Would they play a Zombie game set in the modern period?'

No worries if you can't make it on Sunday. I'll obviously understand and have a good idea on the reason why, should I not see you.

    3. Good comment Roy. "In my day" it was loooked down upon playing Vietnam games, though it was still in vogue. As for 'modern' games (I always think it as contemporary gaming) the route into is is through imaginations (hate the word but it does what it says on the tin).
I'm looking forward to Sunday btw and 99'9% certain I'll be there.

  12. Wow, being ill really sucks. I'm so sorry for your developing and continuing problems.

You never know, you might get a taste for fantasy gaming :-) ! After all, all wargames are really just a form of fantasy anyway...

    1. Thanks for the kind words C6; my enthusiasm for this hobby is up and fown like a bride's nightie, but atm it's on a high!
I don't mind fantasy at all, I agree with you that most games are a fantasy in one way or another no matter the period. I don't mind magic, monsters, space creatures etc. but have little interest in garnering large armies for them - so no 'units' of goblins etc. for me.
